Scorion in final of the Dutch National Phishing Championship
Scorion reaches the finals of the Dutch National Phishing Championship
Today, Team Scorion competed as a finalist in the Dutch National Phishing Championship, organized for the fifth time by IT company Surelock. We signed up as a company to strengthen our awareness and commitment to data security even further. One of our partners, Rayflexcom – an IT company in Deventer that secures and manages our entire Microsoft 365 environment – participated last year and won. That inspired us to take part this year.
Learning about data security in a playful way
At Scorion, we have a tradition of joining games and friendly competitions. Every year we hold our company Christmas quiz, we have a pub quiz team, and several Scorion teams run the IJsselloop in Deventer — where we even placed third last year. So participating in the National Phishing Championship felt like a fun and meaningful next step.
Ten participants and plenty of tricky emails
After registering, we were asked to put forward ten employees. We randomly selected ten colleagues who had no idea they were being chosen. We did share internally that Scorion was participating — and from that moment on, five rounds of creative and deceptive phishing emails started rolling in (the kind we also see in real life from time to time).
Sharper awareness across the company
As expected, a competitive but positive atmosphere emerged. We agreed beforehand that if anyone fell for a phishing attempt during the challenge, we would handle it respectfully — just as we do with internal incident reporting. It’s essential that people keep reporting suspicious activity. Encouragement works far better than punishment.
And now… the finals
We made it into the top eight out of 76 participating companies, and we’re pretty proud of that — especially considering some of the advanced phishing attempts that came our way. One of the toughest challenges was an email sent to our sales team claiming that someone had repeatedly tried to request a quote through our website without success. The message included a link to the so-called conversation history. Fortunately, our sales colleague spotted the trap immediately.
Now it’s time to wait and see. Today we completed the final quiz with the whole team. We’ll hear the results soon…
